Who we are

Pisgah United Methodist Church was founded in the 1780s by Rev. Thomas Terry, who traveled from Yorkshire, England, to the wilds of South Carolina. Bishop Francis Asbury himself visited this area in 1803, noting his journey to “Thomas Terry’s, near the Fork-Shoals of Reedy-River.”

More than two centuries later, we’re still here: gathering, worshiping, serving, and welcoming neighbors.

The building has changed. But God hasn’t.

Neither has our heart to be His hands and feet in this community.

Our Minister

Rev. Wally Culp is a native of Upstate South Carolina.

His father was a United Methodist minister, and Wally grew up in a number of towns and cities in South Carolina. He met his wife, Ellisa, a native of Greenville, SC, while they were attending law school at the University of South Carolina. They graduated in 1986 and were married in 1987. They have their permanent home in Greenville. Ellisa practiced corporate law for several years and is now retired. Wally was a trial lawyer in family court, probate court, and social services law for twenty- five years.

In 2010, Wally was called into Ordained ministry, closed his law practice a year later, and attended Wesley Theological Seminary in Washington, DC from 2011 to 2014, where he graduated with a Master of Divinity degree. He has served churches in the South Carolina United Methodist conference since 2014 and was ordained an Elder in 2016.

Wally and Ellisa have a son, Will (age 33), who lives and works in Zurich, Switzerland, as a CPA, and a daughter, Catherine (age 31), who lives and works in Greenville. For fun, Wally enjoys traveling, golf, going to football and baseball games, and reading books on history.
